I did give it 4 smiling Osamas…and let me tell you, I don't give out that elusive critter very often.

It's just the name: it reminds me of being in elementary school…no scratch that…I was born loving girls. Hell I stole my gramma's wedding ring when I was 5, and married my kindergarten sweetheart. We had a ceremony and everything. We didn't consummate it though, so I guess it doesn't count. Plus her mom started calling around wondering where the heck her little girl got such a nice ring.

Loving the Japanese “spare me my life” video. Top marks. Seen the ukulele video before, but still a good rerun. Dude reminds me of Jay Prado (high school mate).

yep i'd seen the japanese excersise video before. the ukulele one was new to me tho. he made me think of some guy who got really good at guitar hero and decided that he should step it up a notch.

Most kids jump on turntables and start clicking the fader like spazs…these kids demonstrate some serious control with perfect flares and clovers. I've been scratching for probably about twice as long as these kids have been alive, and I can't do clovers like that.

Ugh. I just watched the new Transformers movie last night. What a pile of horse-shit. Art and I had fun mocking it for the first half an hour, however that quickly lost its appeal. Art left, I stuck it out…hoping for the elusive “it'll get better” moment.

On a completely unrelated note: people tend not to like the Huber brothers for whatever reason, but honestly…I think they are the most hardcore climbers in the world right now. This is a trailer of their record breaking speed ascent of The Nose (2:45:45).

Sweet looking climb. Makes me wanna go out and buy a cordless Hilti hammer drill.

Nobody wears climbing shoes at the comps because the rules are: no climbing shoes, no chalk.

Why are those the rules?

a) leave no trace
b) climbing shoes suck for running
c) climbing shoes make things too easy

Plus buildering seems less like buildering when wearing climbing shoes. I’m not sure why…there’s nothing in the definition or history of buildering saying thou shalt not wear climbing shoes. Guess it was just how I was raised .

Groups like these were the highlight of my upbringing. Of course none of them rocked quite as hard as Sonseed.

I heard somebody once describe Christian Rock as the Special Olympics of the music world. I tend to agree. Very few groups find a market outside of the Christian world for a reason.

As a side note, over the years I’ve developed quite a sensitive Christian Music radar, able to discern music within the first couple of bars. I don’t know…it’s almost like they are using some secret, indescribable effect in post-production which gives it away.

That’d be a fun internet quiz: play a sample, and you decide whether it’s christian or secular. I’ll get right to work on that*

For those of you who didn’t grow up in Canada in the early 80s (uhmm, all of you?), here’s a tasty bit of Canadian pop-culture: The Littlest Hobo, a wonderful TV series about a dog who wandered from town to town, helping people out, solving crimes, etc. At the end of every episode, he’d wander off into the sunset, a world of adventure and possibility ahead. I loved the shit out of that dog, and the theme song is pure bliss.

Well, some mash-up genius mixed the Littlest Hobo together with a Lily Allen music video. I should probably file this under the raping of childhood memories, but I kinda like it. It makes me want to go search out the originals:

Nice! Just watched the first part, episode 1 (MTV’s Ultimate Parkour Challenge). I’ve got no opinion yet, but it’ll probably lie somewhere between “Sooo exxxxxxtreme!” (Note: I haven’t heard the X-bomb drop yet, which almost makes it worse given the show style), “<whine>But Parkour isn’t a COMPETITION.</whine>”, and “meh, some nice PK chaps get to make some money, good on em.”

That dog is amazing. But it still didn’t cheer me up after watching THE saddest youtube video in the world. I can’t even bring myself to post it. Sitting in Boston, doing some research on a record store I’m checking out tomorrow. Like so much obscure music, went to YouTube to find online recording of “Fever in the funkhouse” by General Crook. Usually the vid is a pic of the record, or video of the record spinning. I was quite pleased to find this:

It’s very rare that I post parkour vids. And yes, it should probably be in the other half of the forum but I couldn’t be arsed making a new topic so it’s going here instead. Perhaps someone can create a ‘Best Parkour Vids’ thread or something. Save me a job.

Anyways. I’m posting this one because of it’s unlikely source and the fact that I transferred flights in Texas just last week. And also the fact that it has quite a nice feel. So here you go.

Harkening back to our ‘tricks ok / tricks not ok’ discussion…

I like the vibe of this vid. I’m not in the slightest bit impressed by about 80% of the tricks (shove its, finger flips, etc) but there’s some nice bits in there.

(edit: I was watching a version of a vid that someone had stolen and posted as their own. so I switched to the original version.)

Wow. I’ve always thought that longboarders were either: 1. Pussies too scared or inept to ride a real skateboard. 2. Clueless hippies that have no idea there’s a whole world of real skateboarding out there.

But I’m starting to come around.

That first powerslide on the bank scene: how does that differ in any way from the Alva days of skateboarding? Back when riding was about style and not tech. Skateboarding started with banana boards and slalom contests, and over 50 years progressed to FS blunt slides on 30 stair handrails (with a sprinkle of 30mm wheels and pressure flips in between). Now it’s starting to close back in on itself. Perhaps a little bit of skillful longboarding has its place in the world of skateboarding after all.

Interesting thoughts, ard, and glad that you like it. I think the thing that really draws me in with the longboard thing is speed and the freedom. And yes, the style, not neccessarily over technique, but just instead of it, as though the complex techniques aren’t even a part of it. For me it ties in with cycling around a city – there’s a huge sense of freedom of being able to go anywhere, any time, under your own power. (Something which ties in again with the superhero ideal, kinda links with parkour also.) It’s not quite the same as obviously it depends on there being a massive fuck off hill to run down, but you catch my meaning. It’s the whole “I’m riding. Way faster than you. Way cooler than you, And I know you’d rather be on this board (if you had the balls) than stuck in your shitty car.”

I’m sure I’m saying nothing new, but hope you catch my meaning.

Truly, truly remarkable. For me, this raises a number of important questions:

1. Why does so much progress in the world of parkour come straight out of the Ukraine? Are they putting something in the water?
2. Do animals suffer an innate fear of heights in the same way that most people do?
3. Is this dog doing enough conditioning exercises to cope with these large drops?

I fear we shall never know the answer to any of these questions.

Geez, I get behind on the site by a week and look what I miss! So much goodness. Parkour Dog makes my year. RE: Unicycles, well, what did my list say again? OK, *IF* juggling. I’m friends with Kris Holm (the godfather of the unicycle), he’s a frequenter of the site, comes out buildering from time to time, and his sister is a hardcore climber/builderer — so what can I say? I’d agree though, put on some pants. I spent the first 25 years of my life refusing to wear shorts because they just didn’t look good when skating. I still have issues wearing them, only rocking the cut-offs for dodgeball ’cause it’s “ironic” in a total hipster sense.

Nice work, Jayness. That’s just bizarre. In England we have traffic lights and roundabouts, and generally people on bicycles and mopeds try to avoid driving on the wrong side of the road. Especially when negotiating junctions.

I’m so confused by the guy getting run over at 2:01.

So, the rule is that anyone with too much time and money must buy a wingsuit. Inevitably, sooner or later, those with the most time and the most money would strap a FUCKING JET ENGINE to their legs. There are many reasons that I love the Finns.
