Freight Across Canada

In the hole. Unity, Sask. km 1612.

"I consider buying a scanner, but surmise that knowing exactly where a train is going and when would reduce the experience to that of the engineer. Adventure lies in the unknown, however contrived that unknown may be. In the future, should I decide that waiting countless, mind-numbing hours in the bushes for the next train to leave isn't adventure, I will undoubtedly invest in a scanner."

Ard. Focused. Buck Buck. (p) Tawcan

Every year the UBC Varsity Outdoor Club begins the school season with a weekend rock climbing school and party. It's called Longhike, borrowing from the early roots of the club when the big kickoff event was in fact a long hike. At some point in the 1970s people figured out that long hikes weren't nearly as fun as rock climbing, so the objective changed but the name stuck.

Having been the club's DJ for over a decade, I've probably been to more Longhikes than anyone, except Roland who has been an active member since the '60s: "I believe I went on Longhike 1960. We chartered a ferry and went from downtown Vancouver to Woodfibre, where we were served spaghetti and then got to party in the school gym before sleeping there. My air mattress went flat. Sunday we hiked up Sedgwick or one of the related peaks (Roderick?), which have fallen out of favour since the Woodfibre Ferry shut down."

The rock school always takes place in Squamish. The location of the party traditionally has been at the VOC Whistler Lodge, now known as the UBC Whistler lodge after the Alma Mater Society appropriated the property from the club. Yes, the VOC built that lodge. Yes the AMS took it from us. Yes we fought in court over it. Yes we lost -- something about the VOC being a club of the AMS. Pfft. Anyway, for years the AMS kindly allowed us to have our Longhike party at the lodge, but then one year they claimed we were too rowdy and that was the end of that.

Port Coquitlam rail yard. (p) rog45

I leave today for my three week trip across Canada via freight train. I'll be filming the adventure and hope to meet some interesting folks along the way. Likely there won't be any updates for awhile, maybe a brief blub from time to time to let you know how I'm doing. Check the comments of this post.

If you haven't read about my previous train hopping experience, check it here: http://www.buildering.net/node/801

North Gully Slackline

 Category:
north gully slackline

I spent last weekend helping haul gear for the Extreme Ginger kid, aka Robin Avery, for an impressive 38 m long, 240 m high* slackline over the North Gully between the Second and Third Squamish Chief peak.

I was hoping to give the line a try. I've dabbled in highlining in the past, but as it would turn out, I've still got a long way to go before I'm in the league of the Gingers. I'm not gonna front, I was way the fuck outta my element. My "attempt" consisted of tyrolean-ing across just for kicks.

User account theme selection screen.

"Christ, man. I'd only just gotten used to the last theme" - Kiell.

I've made another site theme, and it is back to black. Despite the substantial amount of time I spent trying to lighten things up with the Bryter Layter theme, I was never fully happy with it.

Charcoal is much closer to my ideal. It is lightweight, which equals fast load times. It uses the space more smartly, especially on the full story view where the sidebar disappears. I gave up on fluid width -- in theory it is nice but is a bitch to maintain and develop content on. Seems a lot of the big sites are moving to fixed width. And lastly it is sexy ya? It looks great in Firefox, especially (I hate to admit) on a Mac. The Mac OS X font selection and anti-aliasing in browsers kicks Windows' ass.

Of course the other themes are all still available in your account settings. As always, feedback and bug reports are greatly appreciated.

POTW: Cokering

cokering.

If climbing boulders is bouldering, climbing buildings is buildering, climbing Jello sculptures is foodering (according to the late great Guy Edwards), then climbing giant stacks cocaine would be cokering. This week's pic is the Jan 14th, 2005 cover of Life magazine.

One could argue that those are stacks of coffee, but as the title alludes to, and as anyone who's ever watched an 80's movie could tell you, smuggling coke in coffee bags is standard Columbian modus operandi.

Swine Flu

 Category:

Thanks to SpiderMonkey for posting this in the "you think you know youtube?" forum thread. I purposely live in a media vacuum (internets being the exception), so I've managed to avoid most of the hysteria surrounding the swine flu. But of course I still hear the occasional thing. My favorite: last week at church the pastor goes into an impromptu prayer, "Lord please prevent the swine flu from becoming a pandemic, rada rada rada". I play in the band and happened to be on stage at the time. I couldn't help but chuckle. I hope everyone had their eyes closed like they are supposed to.

Anyway, this video sums up my thoughts nicely on the matter.

End The 'R' Word Day

 Category:

Yay! Special day!

It seems after Big-O's gaff on The Tonight Show, comparing his bowling skills to the "Special Olympics or something", that people are mobilizing to put an end to society's picking on the mentally handicapped. So today is officially "End the 'R' Word Day." Awesome.

On a related note, I once expressed my opinion on the "retard" matter in the old site's Previous Polls section, a favorite section to many. Seems I let the transferring of that section slip in the migration to buildering 2.0. So, I'm going through and reposting the content, starting with Hoes or Bros?

How about we use "nature's clowns" instead? It a great noun substitute, but doesn't work so well as an adjective.
